National Archaeological Museum, Perugia

Travelers interested in history should definitely visit the National Archaeological Museum in Perugia (Museo Archeologico Nazionale dell'Umbria). Here they will see an extensive collection of objects found during excavations in this region. It tells the story of the origin and development of mankind as a whole, as well as about the life of a specific locality. Particular attention is paid to the life of the Etruscan people. In addition to the exhibits, the multimedia component makes the visit even more fascinating.

Collections of the museum

The museum has collected many archaeological finds, the origin of which, in most cases, is determined by Umbria. Guests can see:

  • Mythological exposition – the exhibition of Roman sculptures, telling about ancient myths. It is open constantly.
  • Numismatic cabinet – a collection of Bellucci family coins.
  • Exposition of the Bronze Age – here you can get acquainted with the archaeological finds of the era, for example, with objects of everyday life or weapons.
  • Exposition of the Iron Age shows visitors the characteristics of human development, changes in its life during this period.
  • The Roman section includes various materials, such as maps and photographs that demonstrate the region under the rule of Rome. Here you can get acquainted with the analysis of road systems, settlements, the prevailing types of activity.
  • The Etruscan collection is the section of greatest interest. Here you will find items found during excavations of Etruscan tombs and settlements. Among other things, you can see dishes, household items, weapons. The museum is especially proud of the Cippus Perusinus tablet, which contains examples of Etruscan writing and is an important subject for study.

History of the museum

Its existence started in 1948. It is located on the territory of the monastery of San Domenico, and this fact adds a special taste. Construction of the monastery began in 1233. During the Napoleonic occupation, the building was used as military barracks. And only after almost a century the Archaeological Museum of Umbria was opened here.

How to get there

You can get to the National Archaeological Museum in Perugia by walking from the stop of C. Cavour. You can get there by bus Z21.

Opening hours: the museum is happy to welcome guests from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 to 19:30, and on Mondays from 10:00 to 19:30.

Admission: entrance ticket costs 5 euros, with a discount – 2.5 euros. Free of charge – under the age of 18. On the first Sunday of the month, admission is free. Data of June 2018.
