Theater in Tindari, Tindari

Theater in Tindari, Tindari

In the ancient city of Tindari with the Greek past there is a unique architectural monument, today known as the Theater in Tindari. Now it is in ruins, but it still can tell a lot about its history. In the era of the Emperors, the building served as a place for spectacles. At the present time, the Arts Festival is held here every year.

History of the Theater in Tindari

The theater was built in the end of the 4th century BC. Seats are carved into rock, with the diameter of 76 m. The theater in Tindari was designed for about 3000 people. All places are situated in the form of a staircase, according to the old Greek custom. The steps reach 0.4 meters in height and 0.7 meters in depth. Spectator seats are facing towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the theater is located.

Later, in Roman times, the Greek scene was redone for spectacular performances. Until today, remnants of a typical Roman arch are preserved. The first row was removed out of the 28 others. Instead, a fence was built, and the orchestra was downgraded and turned into an arena.

In the imperial era, the theater held various performances, such as gladiatorial fights and beast hunting. After the reconstruction, it became safe to visit "bloody" events in this building.

In 1939, the remnants of the scene were restored. Since June 1956, an annual Arts Festival has been held in the ancient theater annually. And since 1995 the theater season has gained momentum and has become a real festival with a wide program.

Today, the audience of the ancient theater can see not only performances, but also concerts of classical music and dance performances.
