A statue that is about 5 m high poses on a travertine pedestal with a height of almost 10 m, on the sides – bas-reliefs with military scenes, and from the front – a military bulletin about the victory.

History of the monument

In 1928, the commander Domenico Arena, the father of two officers who died during the war, as well as relatives of the others, initiated the creation of a monument in memory of the heroes. Initially, it was planned to place a monument in the Rione Carità, but in the end, the choice fell on the Piazza Vittorio, as the Duchess Diaz wanted.

Francesco Nagni began the work on the monument in 1933, and in May 1936 the official opening ceremony of the monument to Armando Diaz took place. The equestrian statue of the general was installed on a stone pedestal about 10 meters high. The look of Armando is directed to the sea. On both sides of the marble base there are bas-reliefs depicting military scenes. In front of the monument there is the Rotonda Diaz.

In the spring of 2017 the sculpture of Armando Díaz on horseback was reconstructed. An official opening was held.
