Pastena Caves, Pastena

Pastena Caves, Pastena

The Pastena Caves (Grotte di Pastena) is one of the most picturesque caves in Lazio region. These caves located in the ridge of the Monti Ausoni are part of the Regional Natural Park of Monti Ausoni Lago di Fondi. Carlo Franchetti was the man who discovered them in 1926 and then as early as next year the caves were opened to the public. Specifically, because of this person, we can now enjoy the pristine beauty of the underworld. The Pastena Caves are completely passable; they divide into two paths: the lower one, “active,” which has a river flowing through it and the upper one called “fossil.” The last path owns its name to the stalactites and stalagmites that finished its formation process.

Things to see in the Pastena Caves

You will definitely enjoy guided tours in these huge caves since there are well-made tourist tracks and good lightning. You will most likely notice how the route is divided into two paths once you’re there.

  1. If you choose to take the lower way, you’ll find an underground river and amazing Blue Lake. A small waterfall falls into this lake. Such sight gets especially breathtaking during wet seasons.
  2. Then you will get up on the upper level where the track’s length is 900 meters. There you can walk around the halls and enjoy stalactites, stalagmites and curiously shaped columns.

Fun facts

Although the caves were opened to the public at the beginning of 20th century, people knew this place long before it was officially discovered as the archeological findings indicate. Bronze weapons that are believed to be from 15th century BC were found here. There is also other evidence proving that humans lived around here in ancient times.

During World War II the caves served as a cover for residents.

How to get

The most convenient way to the caves is by car since there is a parking lot nearby.

To get to the Pastena Caves from Rome, travel down Autostrada A1 and, once you reach Ceprano, take the turn to Falvaterra and drive through this village. Then you get on the road leading to Castro dei Volsci and in 4,5 km you’ll see a crossroad where you should turn right. Then follow direction road signs.

Opening hours: on weekdays the first tour starts at 10:30 and the last one ends at 15:30. On the weekend it ends at 16:30.

Admission: ticket costs 9 Euro for adults and 6 Euro for children. The information is relevant for January 2018.
