Greek Walls of Piazza Calenda, Naples

Greek Walls of Piazza Calenda, Naples

The Greek Walls of Piazza Calenda in Naples are the remains of ancient defenses built around natural barriers: deep moats that stretched around the city and thereby protected it from enemy raids.

The walls were created in 6-4 centuries BC. They are the most ancient of all the defensive structures of Naples that have survived till our time. On their route you can trace the boundaries of the ancient city, which ran through several modern streets and lanes: Foria, Pietro Coletta, Mezzocannone and others. Greek Walls were built during the Samnite wars and the founding of the city of Naples.

How to get there

The Greek Walls are situated in the central part of Piazza Calenda. The nearest metro stations are: Porta Nolana, Garibaldi. You will have to walk a little further along Umberto I street and turn onto Egiziaca a Forcella.
