Monument to Gaetano Negri, Milan

Monument to Gaetano Negri, Milan

Although Monumento a Gaetano Negri is located almost in the centre of Milan it is not lavished with tourists' attention. Hidden from people's eyes, this landmark conceals the history of Negri's life from an average citizen. Its appearance evokes a question: why is the personality so undeservedly forgotten? The statue was executed by the sculptor Luigi Secchi and installed in 1908 in a public garden, Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli. Gaetano Negri to whom the monument is dedicated was a prominent political figure of the late 19th century. Twice elected to the Senate, in the period from 1884 to 1889 he was also the mayor of Milan. An educated and cultured politician, he took up science and literature after finishing his career. Negri published several biographies and essays on various eminent figures of the time.

The statue that depicts the politician in the process of reading is made of bronze. Sitting on a bench with his legs crossed, immersed in thoughts, he supports his chin with the left hand and holds a half-open book with the right one.

How to get there

The public park is located a bit north of the city centre in the Porta Nuova and Porta Venezia districts. Not far from the park there are the Gallery of Modern Art in Villa Reale and the Poldi-Pezzoli Museum. Use buses (routes 61, 94) or trams (route 1) to get there and get off at the Piazza Cavour stop or take metro line 3 to Turati station.
