Museum of Landing and Salerno Capital, Salerno

Museum of Landing and Salerno Capital, Salerno

The Museum of Landing and Salerno Capital became a unique place, where the memory of the outstanding events of the coast of Salerno is stored. Here, in the Gulf, one of the most impressive military operations in history was conducted. Today the museum stores rare exhibits of the Second World War and not only.

History of the Museum of the Landing in Salerno

The museum was opened under the patronage of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in September 2012. On this day the 69th anniversary of the landing operation in Salerno under the name "Avalanche" was celebrated.

The permanent exhibition was prepared by the "Parco della memoria della Campania" under the supervision of Nicola Oddati. The purpose of the exhibition is to preserve the memory of the events of September 9, 1943 on the coast of Salerno, when more than 100 thousand soldiers took part in the operation of the anti-Hitler coalition in the Gulf. Later, for a while, Salerno played the role of capital.

Exposition of the museum

Among the exhibits of the museum you can find both personal items of combatants, and objects found in post-war time, including:

  • unpublished video about the operation;
  • photos;
  • medals;
  • uniforms of the Nazi and American armies;
  • house ware;
  • weapons;
  • theM4Sherman tank;
  • jeep-wally;
  • wagon used by the Nazis to deport Italian Jews to concentration camps that was added to the exposition on the occasion of Memorial Day on January 27, 2013.

The wagon and the M4 "Sherman" are rare preserved items of the Second World War. There are only few items like this in the world. During the war the car was sent to Auschwitz, packed with prisoners who, due to poor conditions, often died during the trip.

How to get there

The Museum of Landing and Salerno Capital is located on Via Generale Clark, 5. Nearby there is the metro station Salerno StadioArechi. From it you need to go about 15 minutes to the coast, where the old complex of the Italian army is located – the museum is located inside the industrial block.

Opening hours: daily except Monday.
