Church of San Lorenzo, Verona

Church of San Lorenzo, Verona

In one of the courtyards of beautiful Verona near the Adige river stands the ancient church of San Lorenzo (Chiesa di San Lorenzo), the saint who is deeply revered in Italy. The edifice is both architecturally and historically valuable. After numerous alterations and restorations, the building represents different epochs and styles. As the church was changing, Verona was growing as well. Thus, during its construction, the temple was located outside the city, whereas now this area is Verona's central part.

History of the church

The Church of San Lorenzo was erected in the 12th century. However, during one of the restorations, elements of a mosaic floor dating from the 5th century were discovered. In this regard, there is a version that the church was built by the Romans, then was destroyed as a result of the earthquake of 1117 and was rebuilt on the basis of the remains later in the 12th century.

The church underwent numerous reconstructions that led to its expansion and transformation. Stages of construction can be traced by the material used. The lower part of the building is lined with tufa, pebble and brick, whereas upper layers don't contain pebbles.

Architecture of the church

At the entrance of the temple, guests are greeted by a statue of St Lorenzo, holding a grate that symbolizes the suffering that the martyr experienced during his life. The facade is decorated with two towers that represent Norman architecture. Inside each of them there are stairs leading to matronea. These parts of the building were constructed to accomodate women. Marble Renaissance arches attract visitors' attention.

The temple has three naves, five apses and is divided in two by a transept.
