Grotto Su Marmuri, Ulassai

Grotto Su Marmuri is one of the most interesting sights of Ulassai and is recognized as one of the largest grottoes in Europe. It is located in the eastern part of Sardinia. A labyrinth of unusually shaped stalactites and stalagmites evokes admiration of tourists and attracts more and more travellers. The cave neighbours with a restaurant serving local food.

Information about Su Marmuri

  • The length of the cave is 850 metres.
  • Su Marmuri is located at an altitude of 880 m above sea level and is one of the highest mountain grottoes in Europe.
  • The average height of the Su Marmuri ceilings is about 34 m. The cave received its name due to its unusual colour that resembles marble.
  • The temperature in the Su Marmuri Grotto is +10°C all year round.

Numerous halls connected by tunnels fascinate visitors. Small pools feed on underground waters, forming larger ponds.

Travellers are attracted by the territory adjacent to Su Marmuri: a magnificent oak forest. A trail in it will lead you across the Karst Plateau. Each tourist can enjoy the unusual scenery of the plateau with its shape resembling a heel.  

How to get there

The path to the cave of Su Marmuri from Cagliari lies along the SS125 highway. In the area of Jerzu take the SP11 road. The grotto is situated only 1 km from Ulassai. The road is paved, which means that the traveller will not encounter any difficulties on his way. Breathtaking scenery along the road and mountain ranges separated by large gorges make the trip exciting even for the most experienced traveller.

Working hours: Su Marmuri is not open all year round, it can only be visited from April to October and only in organized groups at the set time:

  • April-October: 11:00, 14:30.
  • May-September: 11:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00.
  • August: 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 18:30.

Duration of the visit: about 1.5 hours.
