Four Fountains, Messina

Four Fountains, Messina

Sculpture Four Fountains is located in the heart of the city of Messina, in its historical part, at the intersection of Via I Settembre and Via Cardines. Kvatro-fountain originally represented four fountains, which were located in the four corners of the square and acted as its main decoration. It is worth noting that to this day only two fountains have preserved.

History of the Four Fountains in Messina

The project of composition Four Fountains was designed by the Italian architect Pietro Calcagni. He was inspired by the marine theme and in his composition used images of dolphins, sea horses and newts. However, each fountain was created by a separate master:

  • In 1666, the sculptor Innosenzo Mangani creates the first fountain.
  • In 1714 the second fountain appeared, the author of the project was Ignazio Bakeeti. The fountain was located near the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini.
  • 1742 – Antonino Amato created two fountains, which finished the general composition of the monument.

The four fountains in Messina are very similar in architecture to the fountains in Palermo and Rome. For their creation, white and pink marble were used. On the fountain there were no Spanish Imperial signs, just the emblem of the House of Savoy and a shield supported by two lions.

In 1908, in Messina, there was an earthquake, after which it was possible to restore only two sculptures, in different corners of the street Cardines. One of the fountains was restored by the architect Pietro Lozhecono in 1959.
