Monument to Cesare Balbo is located in the historic center of Turin, in a beautiful park of the 19th century. This park bears the name of Cesare Balbo, and there are also a few other sculptures of outstanding figures of the Risorgimento era. Thus, you can take a break from the city bustle and spend time with use, plunging into history.
Personality and history of the monument
The monument is dedicated to a famous statesman. His father was the mayor of Turin, and Cesare himself served in various positions, including the military. For some time he wrote many historical and political works. And in 1848 during the War of Independence with Austria, he became the first constitutional Prime Minister of Piedmont. After spending several months in office, he left it, but continued political activity until his death in 1853.
After death, the politicians began work on the creation of the monument. The project was directed by the sculptor Vincenzo Vela, and the statue was ompleted in 1856. The opening took place in 1859 in the park Giardino dei Ripari. Already in 1874 the monument was moved to the park Giardino Aiuola Balbo.
Sculpture
The monument together with the pedestal has a total height of almost 4 meters. The pedestal is made of pink granite, an inscription about the life of the politician is inscribed on it. The sculpture of Cesare is made of white marble. He is seated on a chair while reading. In the lowered right hand he holds glasses, and in the left hand – a book "Le speranze d`Italia". A cloak is thrown on the shoulders of Cesare.
How to get there
The statue is located in the western part of the park, named after the politician, from the Via Accademia Albertina side. In the garden, near the statues, there is also a small fountain in the center. Just behind the park in the north there is the Natural Science Museum. You can get there by buses № 6, 18, 61, 68, S05, S18, STAR2. Get off at the Cavour stop.
