Lake Bolsena, Province of Viterbo

Lake Bolsena, Province of Viterbo

In the Italian province Viterbo there is by far the largest European lake crater lake called Bolsena (Lago di Bolsena). This reservoir formed in a volcano caldera 370 thousand years ago. Today it is 146 meters deep and around 14 kilometers long. Numerous hotels can be found at the lake, in the city of Bolsena that carries the same name and boasts a medieval fortress and in towns such as Capodimonte and Montefiascone. The shore is surrounded with vineyards, olive groves as well as volcanic beaches and fascinating nature. Recreation at Lake Bolsena is the perfect choice for those who appreciate secluded paradisiacal retreat in the Italian outback.

Lake islands

There are two islands this huge lake that was a result of lava erupting underwater. The first one is called Bisentina. This island is considered to be a bit bigger than the other, it takes up 17 hectares of space. Its territory is covered with impassable oak groves and old gardens. The second one is called Martana. It is privately-owned and located near the town of Marta.

Things to do at Lake Bolsena

One of the main activities here is fishing. Every year a huge number of professionals and enthusiasts of this quite popular hobby come here since Bolsena hosts a grandiose fish festival in July. If you are not big on fishing, then you will, without a doubt, be impressed with fascinating lake nature and vast volcanic beaches. Visitors also have an opportunity to practice water sports or just lie in the sun.

How to get

Bolsena is situated between Rome and the Tuscany region. If you are traveling from Rome, then follow the Autostrada A1 that connects Rome and Florence, then turn at the Orvieto sign. You can also take a train. Stations that are the closest to the lake are Orvieto, Viterbo, and Montefiascone. After that take a shuttle bus.
