Mountain Arcuentu, Arbus

Mountain Arcuentu, Arbus

Monte Arcuentu is a volcanic massif that is located in the central part of the island of Sardinia. It runs parallel to the Green Coast, better known as Costa Verde. In the Southern part it borders with another mountain range – Monte Linas. Mountain Arcuentu is a tourist gem of Sardinia. The nature and fantastic landscapes, which open from the top of the mountain deserve special attention.

About Mountain Arcuentu

Arcuentu was formed as a consequence of eruptions. Today, centuries later, we can see tuff, basalt rocks, rhyolite and others here.

As we approach the coast, the height of the mountains decreases. The main peak in the massif is Mountain Arcuentu (its height is 785 m). The mountain is composed of a series of spiers thanks to which the volcanic massif acquires a special uninhabited landscape. By the way, the origin of the name of the mountain is associated with its forms. The Sardinian word árku characterizes what a mountain looks like.

From the top of Arcuentu you can observe a view over the Sinis peninsula, Arci Mountaine, the Gulf of Oristano, the plain of Campidano and much more. A famous tourist place – the mines of Montevecchio – is situated not far from the mountains. Along the coast you can visit one of the beaches with golden sand.

How to get there

The Mountain Arcuentu volcanic massif can be accessed in two ways:

  • From the Southern coast of Sardinia (Cagliari) – drive 44 km along the SS131 road, after the exit for Sanluri, proceed towards San Gavino Monreale.
  • From the Northern part of Sardinia (Oristano) – follow the SS131 road until the exit to Marrubiu. Then continue along the road in the direction of Terralba and Guspini, at the fork with a turn to the village turn towards Costa Verde and follow 7 km along the country road.

To the very top of Arcuentu the pedestrian walkway is laid from Club Alpino Italiano – №192. It starts from the mines of Montevecchio.
