Monument to Edmondo de Amicis, Turin

Monument to Edmondo de Amicis, Turin

The monument to Edmondo de Amicis is located in the center of Turin. This is a sculptural composition where the person to whom it is dedicated is only a small portion of it. Nevertheless, it is interesting, detailed and made with complete devotion.

Personality and history of the monument

The monument is dedicated to the world-famous Italian writer of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He began his career as a military man but after losing the Battle of Custoza he devoted himself to journalism. Later he wrote several novellas and novels that brought him fame and were translated into many languages. In his works, he put a spotlight on the social problems of local residents including the education. His most famous story, Cuore, was written as a student diary. In 1908 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize and died the same year.

Upon the initiative of "Gazzetta del Popolo" and with the support of the city authorities, it was decided to create a monument to the writer after he died. The memorial was meant to perpetuate Edmondo as a teacher. The competition was not held because a close friend of the writer, the famous sculptor Edoardo Rubino, took the project upon himself. He worked on the monument from 1910 to 1914 and refused to be paid for it in memory of a friend. The monument was opened in 1923, 9 years after the completion of the work.

Sculptural composition

The sculpture itself consists of two parts. In the foreground there is a statue called “Seminatrice di buone parole” – it is placed on a plinth. A woman is depicted with a bag from which she sows seeds. This is a prototype of the seeds of good words that the writer planted with his works in the hearts of the Italians. In the background, there is also a semicircular wall, “esedra”, which is 6 meters long. It has the bas-reliefs of children, scenes from everyday life from the book “Cuore”, which made the writer famous.

You might ask: where is Edmondo himself? His profile is carved as a bas-relief on the pedestal of the statue in the foreground. The whole composition is made of stone and white marble. On sunny days senior citizens can be seen playing tabletop games on benches.

How to get

The monument to the writer is located in the Sambuy garden on Piazza Carlo Felice, near the historical center of Turin. It will be difficult to not notice it because there is the station of Turin right at the square. Monuments to Joseph Lagrange and Pietro Paleocapa can be found in the neighboring squares. The place can be reached by subway, trams № 4, 7, 9, and buses № 11, 12, 33, 52, 58, 64, 67, 68, 92, 101, S05. You need to get off at the Porta Nuova stop.
