Ponte Umberto I, Rome

Ponte Umberto I in Rome is one of the bridges across the Tiber River, which connects the Courts Square and the Ponte Umberto I area. The building dates back to the end of the 19th century. The bridge is not only a harmonic addition to the architecture of the Eternal City, but also performs the function of unloading the traffic of Rome.

History of Ponte Umberto I

The first stone to the creation of the new bridge was laid in 1885, it was created to facilitate the passage to the royal palace, as well as to the building of the Supreme Constitutional Court. Construction lasted for 10 years and for its creation 2 million 800 thousand lira was allocated. The project was led by the famous Italian architect of the end of the 19th century Angelo Vescovali, also the project of the bridge of Queen Margarita belongs to this master. The construction was carried out by the company Impresa Allegri.

Ceremony of the grand opening of the bridge took place on September 22, 1895 in the presence of the Italian king Umberto I, as well as his wife Margarita of Savoy. The bridge received its name in honor of the king. The composition of the bridge consists of three arches, in length it reaches 105 m, and its width – about 20 m.

From the bridge there is a beautiful view of St. Peter's Catholic Cathedral, built in the 16th century, and also near there is the ancient Ponte Sant'Angelo.
