Carafa di Maddaloni Palace, Naples

Carafa di Maddaloni Palace, Naples

Carafa di Maddaloni Palace is one of the most interesting buildings in Naples. The Palazzo is located in the heart of the old town, near the famous Spaccanapoli street – the city's attraction, on the street with the same name Via Maddaloni. The palace was built in the late 16th century. It is called the symbol of luxury of the past of Naples. Previously, the palazzo bore the name of d'Avalos. From the Toledo street, the building can be recognized by the orange facade.

History of Carafa di Maddaloni Palace

The Duke Cesare d'Avalos, after whom the palace used to be called, ordered the construction of a palazzo in 1580. In the following years, the Duke acquired several nearby lands and buildings, thus greatly expanding his possessions.

In the 17th century, the palace was resold several times, until in 1656 the building was purchased by Diomede V Carafa, Duke of Maddaloni. Then the reconstruction and decoration of the palace were commissioned by Cosimo Fanzago. In the 18th century the palace looked magnificent: a porch in front of the entrance, a wide staircase, marble loggias and terraces. Graceful frescoes were given to the building by Fedele Fischetti.

In 1806, Diomede Marzio Pacecco Carafa was forced to sell the palace complex because of debts. The palace was divided and sold in parts. The new owners were princes, duchesses and others. The complex was badly damaged during the Second World War, and also in 1980 from the earthquake. After that, the palace was being restored for about 30 years.

Pay attention to the portal, which rises to the second floor. Above the balconies you will see an image of eagles and lions, symbolizing the dignity of the Carafa family.

On the first floor there are frescos of Fedele Fischetti created in the middle of the 18th century. One of the most interesting rooms is the great hall of Maddaloni. It was used for balls, concerts, social gatherings, composers Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Domenico Scarlatti, Leonardo Leo and others performed here.
